🎄 How to Celebrate Asheville During the Holidays

A Seasonal Guide by Albus, Chief Barketing Officer

Hi friends, it’s me — Albus, Asheville’s most distinguished Shih Tzu, holiday enthusiast, and professional lap-warmer. As the Chief Barketing Officer at Asheville Realty Group, I consider it my duty to sniff out the very best ways to enjoy our magical mountain city during the holiday season.

So shake out your fur, grab a cozy sweater (I prefer cable knit, naturally), and follow my lead. Here are my paw-sonal tips for celebrating Asheville during the most wonderful time of the year:

🐾 1. Start With a Scenic Stroll… Preferably Somewhere With Ducks

There’s nothing quite like Beaver Lake on a crisp winter morning. The air is cool, the views are dreamy, and the ducks? Well, they’re basically celebrities in my world. Bring treats (for you, not for them — I’ve been told that’s “not allowed”), and enjoy the stillness that makes Asheville feel like a postcard.

🎁 2. Support the Local Shops That Smell the Best

Downtown Asheville turns into a holiday wonderland in December. Window lights sparkle, people sip hot chocolate, and every shop has a different, fascinating aroma.
Pro tip: My favorite stores are the ones that keep treats behind the counter. I’m looking at you, Arete.

Pick up gifts for your hoomans, your besties, and of course… your favorite office dogs.

🎶 3. Attend Something Musical (I Will Sing If Asked)

The Asheville Symphony hits a different kind of high note during the holidays. And don’t forget the local choirs, buskers downtown, and music nights at The Grove Park Inn. If you hear a tiny bark harmonizing in the background, that’s just me adding some flair.

🌟 4. The Grove Park Gingerbread Houses: A Must-Sniff Experience

The annual gingerbread competition is one of my favorite traditions. The creativity! The craftsmanship! The unbearable temptation to lick the displays! (I am no longer allowed to get too close.)
But trust me — it’s worth the visit. Bring a camera. Bring your patience. Bring a dog treat so I don’t beg for the gingerbread.

🏰 5. Visit the Biltmore Estate — Holiday Magic in Every Corner

Ahhh, Biltmore. The granddaddy of Christmas in Asheville. The mansion glows with thousands of twinkling lights, towering trees, and rooms so beautiful they make even me behave.
The Candlelight Christmas Evenings? Pure enchantment.
The gardens and Antler Hill Village? Excellent sniffing opportunities.
And while I don’t get to wander inside (apparently “historic preservation” is a thing), the outside grounds alone are a winter wonderland.

It’s a must for any Asheville holiday adventure — hoomans and well-behaved pups alike.

❄️ 6. Go See the Lights — The Brighter, The Better

Asheville shines this time of year with so many dazzling light displays. My top favorites:

Winter Lights at the NC Arboretum

Magical. Sparkly. Smells like pine and funnel cakes. A 10/10 sensory experience.

Biltmore Village Holiday Lights

Charming, festive, and perfect for a nighttime stroll.

Lake Julian Festival of Lights

This one is a drive-through delight — ideal for dogs who love sticking their heads out the window (me) and hoomans who prefer to stay warm. The reflections on the water make it extra magical, and yes, I do bark at the glowing swans every year.

Trust me: the brighter the lights, the faster my tail wags.

🏡 7. Host Something Cozy at Home

Whether you live in a charming North Asheville bungalow, a mountain-top lodge, or a downtown condo with skyline views, the holidays are the perfect time to gather your pack.
Light the fire. Turn on the twinkle lights. Put out some snacks.
And please, for the love of squeaky toys, drop at least one on the floor for me.

🎅 8. And of Course… Visit Asheville Realty Group for Holiday Cheer

We take “Home for the Holidays” seriously. From parade floats to festive open houses to warm hugs at the office — this is where the magic (and the treats) live. I make sure every guest feels welcome. And seen. And slightly sniffed.

❤️ Final Thoughts From Your Favorite Four-Legged Local

Asheville isn’t just a place — it’s a feeling. A cozy, connected, joy-filled kind of magic that makes even a small dog like me feel part of something big.

So go out, explore, celebrate, and soak in every twinkling moment of the season.
If you need a guide, I’ll be right here… tail wagging, ready for adventure.

Happy Holidays, Asheville!
Warm licks and wags,
